In Dellbrück, a district of Cologne, is the RadioMuseum Köln. The museum documents the technical and media-historical development of broadcasting and illustrates the stages of receiver use.
In 1999 a support association was founded that decided on the establishment of the museum and its opening to the public. The exhibits particularly trace the succession of reception technologies: initially there were local transmitters and detector radios, which could only be used with headphones. Later came sets with vacuum tubes that enabled electronic amplification but at first usually still lacked speakers and therefore also required headphones.
The collection of the RadioMuseum Köln comprises around 4,000 objects and ranges from the earliest receiving devices to unusual modern transistor radios. From 19 January to 5 June 2016, 22 selected exhibits were shown in the special exhibition "RADIO Zeit Röhrengeräte, Design-Ikonen, Internetradio" at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Köln.
