Simultanhalle

Anchored in Köln-Volkhoven, the Simultanhalle – Raum für zeitgenössische Kunst presents itself as a venue for contemporary exhibition projects. The hall is located at Volkhovener Weg 209–211.

The building dates from 1979 and was constructed as an experimental and prototype structure for the Museum Ludwig on the site of a former school. It was used to test lighting design as well as various exterior, ceiling and floor finishes; architecturally defining is the sawtooth roof structure.

When the testing phase ended, demolition was considered; in 1983 female and male artists prevented this by organizing studio exhibitions. Subsequently the building developed into a permanently used exhibition space. In 1984 the City of Cologne assumed responsibility, and since 1989 the artistic programme has been shaped by rotating female and male curators. Over the course of 25 years some 150 female and male artists showed works, including Jutta Koether, Kai Althoff and Walter Dahn.

Since 2018 the hall has been closed until further notice due to structural concerns. Since then projects have taken place on the outdoor site and in the immediate vicinity.
